The project that came to rekindle Gnomon
Gnomon has existed since 2019, built through university research and maintained for years without funding. Recife em Trama is the project that took over this app, secured public funding and turned it into a teacher training tool — with new curation, an expanded collection, and an explicit social purpose.

An app with years of history, starting a new chapter.
Gnomon was born from research in educational computing: a geolocation app to bring heritage and schools closer together. It worked, had methodology, but remained without a team, without curated content, and without reach. It stayed that way for years.
Recife em Trama arrived with the missing question: how to expand this mapping to also include the memories the official city has not yet recorded? From there came the Funcultura funding, the curation of invisibilized heritage, and the training of educators.
02Specific goals
Five goals agreed in the public call. Each becomes a public good by the project's end.
Curation of 300 sites and 30 thematic routes
Documentary research and community listening, prioritising places of Black, Indigenous and working-class memory with no official signage.
24-hour training course
Distance learning with certification in Heritage Education, ERER and use of the app in field activities with students.
Three in-person workshops in the neighbourhood
Guided tours in which participants register sites in the app with mediation, a Libras interpreter and audio description.
Two openly licensed ebooks
A methodological workbook for teachers and a publication with the curation results, distributed at no cost.
